How to Make Instant Pot Egg Bites

egg bites recipe

Here are the ingredients for making egg bites Instant Pot recipe.

egg bites ingredients

Cheese. We crafted this egg bites Instant Pot recipe with 3 types of cheese: cottage cheese, cheddar cheese, and mozzarella cheese. This creates a blend of rich flavors and aromas. If necessary, you can use less cheese or adjust the amount according to your personal preferences.

  • Cottage Cheese: If you don’t like cottage cheese’s texture, don’t worry! It’s going to melt and blend into the egg bites. Or you can make Instant Pot egg bites without cottage cheese and substitute it with ricotta cheese.
  • Egg Bites with Ricotta Cheese: Based on our experiments, they’re still tasty! Keep in mind it’ll yield a different texture and taste compared to using cottage cheese. Also, make sure to drain the water well.

Bacon. Browning the bacon is optional, but this step elevates the flavor and aroma of the egg bites. You can omit it or substitute it with ham or prosciutto.

  • Substituting with Diced Ham: Reduce 30% weight of the bacon when substituting with ham. Based on our experiments, the fillings-and-eggs ratio is more balanced this way.

Regular Soy Sauce. It’ll add a kick of umami flavor to the egg bites. Give it a shot!

Smoky Flavor & Aroma Boost: We used smoked cheddar cheese and smoked bacon for an extra dimension of smoky aroma and flavor.

Mix and Match Ingredients: Feel free to customize the mix-in ingredients (meat, veggies, cheese) according to your preferences. For example, you can use ham, spinach, bell peppers, mushrooms, sausage, etc. to make your own “Starbucks egg bites”. Have fun!
Double Batch: You can make a double batch by layering one silicone egg bite mold over another silicone mold. Just double all the ingredients.

You can either brown the bacon in Instant Pot or in the oven.

Method #1 – Instant Pot:

  1. Add bacon in Instant Pot, then heat up Instant Pot using “Sauté More” function. You don’t need to add oil.

Method # 2 – Oven:

  1. Place bacon on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  2. Place a baking sheet on the middle rack of a preheated 400°F oven.
  3. Bake bacon until crispy and golden-brown. Set a timer for roughly 18 to 20 minutes.
Step 2

Notes

1. Cheese: If you like, you can use less cheese. Feel free to adjust according to your personal preferences.
  • Cottage Cheese: If you don’t like cottage cheese's texture, don't worry! It's going to melt and blend into the egg bites. You can substitute it with ricotta cheese, yogurt, or heavy cream.
  • Substituting with Ricotta Cheese: Make sure to drain the water well. Based on our experiments, it's still delicious! Keep in mind the egg bites' texture & flavor will differ from those with cottage cheese.
2. Bacon: Browning the bacon is optional, but this step elevates the egg bites' flavors and aroma. You can omit it or substitute it with ham or prosciutto.
  • Substituting with Diced Ham: Use 70 grams of ham. Based on our experiments, this "filling-to-egg" ratio is more balanced.
3. Smoky Flavor & Aroma Boost: We used smoked cheddar cheese and smoked bacon for an extra dimension of smoky aroma and flavor.
4. Regular Soy Sauce: It’ll add a kick of umami flavor to the egg bites. Give it a shot!
5. Customize Fillings: You can customize the mix-in ingredients (meat, veggies, cheese) according to your preferences. For example, you can use ham, spinach, bell peppers, mushrooms, sausage, etc.
6. Fillings Distribution: Some users preload the fillings (i.e. bacon) in the mold to ensure even distribution amongst the egg bites. With this method, the fillings may end up mostly at the bottom of the egg bites. Since we prefer to have fillings scattered throughout the egg bite, we mix the fillings with the egg mixture.
7. Blend Egg Mixture: It's not necessary to blend the egg mixture as long as you mix it well. But if you like a more smooth custard-like texture, use an immersion blender to blend the egg mixture.
8. Egg Bites Mold:
  • Mold Lid: If your lid is heat resistant, it should be okay to use instead of a foil cover. You may need to add more pressure cooking time because the lid is likely thicker.
  • Silicone Muffin Cups: You can use them instead of egg bites mold. You may need to increase the pressure cooking time depending on the thickness & size.
  • Oil or Nonstick Spray: From our experiments, our egg bites popped out fine without using any oil or nonstick spray. But depending on your mold, you may need to use it before pouring in the mixture.
9. Aluminum Foil: Wrapping the egg bites mold with foil keeps the water condensation from dropping onto the egg bites in Instant Pot. Don't wrap it too tight because it may affect the cooking time.
10. Egg Bites Not Fully Cooked: If the egg bites are still somewhat wet (not fully cooked) after pressure cooking, place them back in the Instant Pot immediately, then close the lid to stream for another few minutes.
11. Double the Recipe: You can make a double batch by layering one silicone egg bite mold over another silicone mold. Just double all the ingredients.
12. Reheat: Best way to reheat is by steaming egg bites in Instant Pot with the pot-in-pot method.
