What is Taro?

Taro root is a starchy root vegetable originally cultivated in Asia.

It’s a good source of fiber and many vitamins & minerals that benefit our overall health (i.e. helps improve digestion, lower blood sugar levels, boost immune system).

If you’re familiar with Haiwaiian food, the popular Hawaiian side dish “Poi” is exactly made of Taro root! 🙂

Purple sweet potato is amazing. I find them at Whole Foods. Trader Joe’s has purple yam ice cream that is the bomb!

amber

can you substitute milk for non-dairy milk (oat, almond, rice)?
can you substitute sugar for Monk fruit or Maple syrup?

Gregory Lee

Yikes! Seems like 1/4 – 1/2 cup of sugar instantly negates any nutritional goodness this would have. Any way to not use sugar (or anything just as bad) and still have it be edibly tolerable?

Monica

Thank you. I look forward to giving this a try ?

Doug Hales

So now I am really confused from your response.

“You can omit it if you cannot find it.”

Did you mean to use a regular sweet potato instead or did you mean to not use any sweet potato at all?

Doug Hales

What is the reason for purple sweet potatoes? Where i am, I can’t always find them, and wondered if regular sweet potatoes would work.

Monica

I am wondering the same thing. I don’t know what a purple sweet potato tastes like so if anyone has suggestions for something else that could be used to sweeten without affecting the taste too much ?

Free

Purple sweet potato is starchy like Taro; that’s why you can omit but not substitute. Yams will be too watery.
