1. What is an Instant Pot?

Instant Pot Review: Which Instant Pot to Buy. First-hand user experience of all Instant Pot Electric Pressure Cookers. Thoughts on what size, model, features, price is best Instant Pot to buy.

Instant Pot is essentially an Electric Pressure Cooker that can pressure cook, slow cook, make yogurt, make rice, make cake, steam, acts as a warmer, and sous vide.

*Note: Some features are limited to certain models – further explained in below Instant Pot Review.

Best of all: you can set-it-and-forget-it!

Don’t worry! They are much safer than old-fashioned pressure cookers. And they do make home cooking much easier & faster.

It’s especially awesome for young families and those with hectic lifestyles.

5. Instant Pot LUX vs DUO?

5a. Which Instant Pot to Buy – Instant Pot LUX60 vs DUO60?

We wholeheartedly recommend the DUO models over the LUX models.

Instant Pot Review: Which Instant Pot to Buy. A comparison and thought on Instant pot lux60 vs Instant Pot duo60 Electric Pressure Cookers.

Here’s Why We love DUO More Than LUX:

  • Dual Pressure Cooking Mode – You can cook at both High Pressure & Low Pressure with DUO models. This gives you more versatility and flexibility in cooking different types of food.
  • Yogurt Maker – You can easily make homemade yogurt with the DUO models.
  • Better Designs – DUO models have improved ergonomics and design compare to LUX models. It’s easier to handle, open/close the lid, have a better Steam Release Valve, and easier to spot the Floating Valve (to see if the Instant Pot is up to pressure).
  • Lid Holder – The two lid holders on the left & right handles will help save some counter-space.

For an extra ~$20, we think these features are more than worth it in the long run.

5b. I Won’t Make Homemade Yogurt, Should I Still Buy DUO?

Yes! Even if you don’t need to make yogurt. Unless you are really tight on budget or if you’re snatching a super deal for the LUX models. Then, that’s another story. 🙂

6. Is Ultra Worth the Extra Money?

It depends.

Sleek Design

Instant Pot Ultra’s clean, modern, sleek design is definitely a big win against all other Instant Pot models.

Instant Pot Review: Which Instant Pot to Buy. Thoughts on If Ultra is worth the extra money.

One thing to mention is since you can only navigate with the Push Dial, it’s slightly less user-friendly & takes more time to set or adjust compare to other Instant Pot models.

Some readers told us they had difficulty adjusting from using Instant Pot DUO60 to Instant Pot Ultra, however others mentioned it was easy. Just keep this in mind.

Auto-Sealing System

Instant Pot Ultra’s Steam Release Valve automatically seals when you close & secure the Instant Pot lid. So you’ll have one less thing to worry about when cooking with Instant Pot. Yay!

Then you release pressure by pressing the Quick Release Button rather than flipping the Steam Release Valve (where the hot stem comes out). This new system makes it safer and less scary, especially for newbies!

Instant Pot Review: Which Instant Pot to Buy - Instant Pot Ultra New Sealing Method

Since Instant Pot Ultra is currently the only model that has this feature, this feature might be a big win for those who are forgetful in the chaotic kitchen. 😛

Though this design is a huge plus, it does have a downside.

At times when the liquid in the Instant Pot is boiling, you may struggle to close the lid because the safety locking mechanism is activated. So you’ll have to manually press down the Quick Release Button for it to close.

Temperature Customization (i.e. Sous Vide)

Besides selecting Low, Medium, or High temperature settings, the Instant Pot Ultra allows you to select your own temperature setting in Ultra, Slow Cook, Keep Warm, Yogurt, and Saute Modes. This opens lots of exciting possibilities!

Instant Pot Review: Which Instant Pot to Buy. Instant Pot Ultra Temperature Customization Feature

If you’re considering buying Instant Pot Ultra so you don’t have to buy a separate Immersion Circulator, you might want to reconsider. You can read more into the reasoning in our full review here.

But, if you’re tight on storage space & think it’s not a good idea to “surprise” your spouse for buying 2 gadgets at once, this will do for now. 😉

Our Recommendations:

New Instant Pot Users: If you’re a techie who likes to experiment with cooking & enjoys the flexibility of customization, this is an all-around awesome & versatile kitchen gadget to cook with.

If not, we’d highly recommend Instant Pot DUO Plus 60 – the most user-friendly Instant Pot Electric Pressure Cooker.

Current Instant Pot Users: If you are looking for a second Instant Pot to interchange or help cook different dishes at the same time, we’d highly recommend Instant Pot DUO Plus 60.

But if you’re looking for an upgrade with more advanced usage, Instant Pot Ultra will be a great addition.

Buy as a Gift: From the packaging to the sleek clean design, this would make an awesome gift for family and friends who love to cook, experiment, learn new technology & test out new kitchen gadgets.

  1. Hello Amy + Jacky – I have a Cuisinart Pressure cooker – the inner pot is non-stick and it got scratched. It cost ~ $48 to replace – wondering if the Pressure Cooker replacement bowl will fit in a Cuisinart Pressure Cooker? Do you like the non-stick vs the stainless steel bowl?

    1. Hi Patty,

thank you for your question 🙂

We prefer the stainless steel inner pot as it is more durable.

I recommend contacting the Cuisinart customer service about this.

      Please take care!
      Jacky

  2. I agree, the Duo is the way to go! I had it first and now have a Lux. I prefer the duo, not sure why, I just do!
I’m enjoying your site. Good recipes and clear directions!

  3. Thank you for this site. It’s so helpful and informative. I love my 6 qt duo plus! When I’m cooking I find that I mainly use the pressure cook function verses pressing one of the programmed buttons. I also wonder about the 3 settings (low, normal, high) within the pressure cooker function. I find myself guessing as to which setting to use. Can you help, please?

    1. Hi Donna,

thank you so much for your kind words 🙂

The low, normal, and high setting for the pressure cook function is only for time adjustment only.

Please take care & have fun cooking
      Jacky

  4. Hi
I am reading your good comments about choosing what model..
My eye caught a box with WiFi and also I would like to have cake possibility.
Can you explain if it’s possible, or how to make cake if no cake button??
Also, your thoughts on wifi feature use,
    does it add recipes.?
And which model would have cake, yougurt and Wi-Fi.

    1. Hi Christine,

thank you for your question 🙂

The pressure cook button will work just fine to make a cake.

I recommend the DUO 60 Plus.

Please take care & have fun cooking
      Jacky

  5. Hi Amy and Jacky
I have 2 Fagor 8 stove top pressure cookers and an Instant pot Duo80 since I cook quite a bit for family and friends.
Since they were on sale today, I decided to buy an instant pot duo60-v3 for when I make smaller meals.
Do you know what the V-3 refers to and also I have read the instructions but I can’t find where the manual button is located. All I can find is that you choose a button function and either increase the time or decrease it. Would you know if that is correct because I use the manual button 99% of the time when I use the instant pot. Or would you suggest I return and purchase the duo60 plus. I value your option.
    Thanks for your time
    Mil

Not sure what the v-3 refers to

    1. Hi Mil,

Congrats on your new Instant Pot Duo60 🙂 and Happy Thanksgiving!

The DUO60 v3 has the manual button renamed to pressure cook.

Both the Duo 60 and Duo Plus 60 are very similar so either one is fine!

Please take care & have fun cooking
      Jacky

  6. getI am blind, and I am wondering if they still make the smart IEP? A friend of mine had one and was able to hook it up to their iPhone. What do you know about this?

  7. I am cooking my first roast. I have the Ulta 6 qt. When I set the pressure cooking setting I have either low or high pressure. Did not see what parameter to use. I have never used a pressure cooker before

    1. Hi Sandra,

thank you for your question 🙂

It is a very good one. I would rate it very similar to Instant Pot DUO and Instant Pot Duo Plus

  8. Hi Amy & Jacky. Thanks so much for your quick response to my questions. I know I need to jump in there & start using my instant pot. I’m a newbie & still have a little apprehension. I’m going to do the water test today & cook some eggs & other easy things you have recommended. One last question. Is it still easy to cook chicken with the Duo plus 8 qt? I wonder why they took off the chicken button while the regular Duo still has it & what would be an easy recipe to start with chicken thighs? Thanks again so much. Deborah.

  9. I love your site. You are so informative, have great recipes and answer questions so quickly. Was a little confused when you said the #1 was the Duo plus 6 quart & for the large one just the Duo 8 quart 7 in 1 not the plus. Is it because it’s cheaper than the plus? Thanks so much, Deb.

  10. You guys are the greatest! Your web site is packed with very informative material. I have been reading it for the last two days. I only wish I would have discovered it before I ever used my DUO80. It would have lowered my frustration level and learning curve. I will be telling all my friends about your site.
    Keep up the great work!!!
    Jim

    1. Hehe thank you for your kind words and being so supportive Jim 🙂

  11. Hi Amy & Jacky. I thought you said the best recommended pot was the Duo Plus but then I read today on your site the Duo 6. I like to do batch cooking but will blow a fuse in my kitchen if I plug in 2 appliances. I would have to take one in another part of the house. 2 duo 6 or one duo plus 8? Thanks. Deborah.

  12. I have the instant pot Lux60V3. I,m using it 2or 3 times a week!! The only timeI feel to be extra carefull is when I have to look at the popup valve. It stays down about a 1/2 inch when the unit is pressurized. I don,t know why they did not make the valve a quarter inch longer so it would rise a little higher .A colored top would have helped also.Thank you

  13. I will be buying an IP, but can’t decide on the size. Some info for you: single person, protein portions small due to medical diet (meaning 2 average chicken breasts is the protein for 6 meals for me), like to make soup broth vs using commercial broth (due to sodium content in commercial broth), counter space is a bit tight but could hold a 6 Qt IP, and I like to ‘tinker’ with recipes when I cook using pots and pans. Took the Quiz which suggested 6 Qt Smart followed by 6 Qt Plus but I have not found the Plus, Ultra or Smart models available where I live. Concerns I have if I buy the 3 Qt: recipe availability is limited and I wonder if all recipes for a 6 Qt can always be cut in half with great results?; replacement parts may need to be ordered from the company, and; extras (such as containers for doing 2 in 1) are difficult to locate. Based on the above, which size would you suggest I buy? Thank you for your input.

    1. Hi Leslie,

If you like making soup broth, I would recommend a 6 quart as you can freeze some of the soup broth for later use too.

If you cannot find the 6 Qt Plus, I would recommend the DUO60.

Happy New Year to you and your family

  14. Thank you for your input, although I am still not sure which one to get, I a going to continue reading other articles on your site. Thank you again for doing all this comparison of all the different models.

  15. Hi there I got a ultra 60 instant pot for Christmas, I am new to this and I found it overwhelming just reading on how to use it. I haven’t tried to use it yet. I like to make pulled pork at some point when I get the nerve.

    1. Hi Arlene,

Congrats on your new Instant Pot Ultra and thank you for your comment 🙂

  16. Hi there,
I love the duo plus features n was considering to get 1 but getting instant pot ultra in a very good deal n saving lot of money ….. shld I buy it As was wondering ultra is very high tech n not user friendly…. is it easy to understand using ultra or shld I buy the duo plus ? Pls help……

    1. Hi Meeta,

Thank you for your question 🙂
The Instant Pot duo plus is definitely more user-friendly. The Ultra has a slightly higher learning curve, but with practice, it will be easy to use as well.
Get the Ultra if you like it more. We will be here to help 🙂

Happy New Year to you and your family!

    1. Hi Eva,

thank you for your question ?

Our recipes are developed in the 6 quarts and for most of them you will not need to divide the recipe in half (as long as the meat fits)

For recipes with a lot of liquid such as soups, pasta, congees, stocks…etc, you will want to cut them by half.

The cooking time will stay the same!

Take care & have a wonderful week!

  17. Can you use the Plus or Duo for Sous Vide cooking or only the Ultra? I know it is not as good as a dedicated “stick” or sous vide oven but I would like to try sous vide and also lack storage space right now. If I like it I would consider getting a dedicated system. Then the question is which one! Any suggestions?

    1. Hi Buff,

thank you for your question 🙂

The Duo and Plus cannot customize the temperature setting so it will be extremely limited for sous vide cooking.

Both Instant Pot Smart (with Bluetooth phone app) and Ultra will be a good choice for “Poor-man” Sous Vide.

At this point I would choose the Ultra over Smart as it is cheaper and you don’t need to connect it to your phone to set the temperature.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

  18. Can you bake in the DUO60? My mother is getting me an Instant Pot for Christmas, we’re just not sure which one. I like the idea of being able to bake in the DUO Plus, but the DUO 60 would be ok if I can bake in it, too. I know it doesn’t have that specific function.

    1. Hi Virginia,

thank you for your question 🙂

We have tried the mini. Amy thinks it is super cute.

For me, I would consider buying another DUO60 or DUO80 (if counter space allowed).

Take care & have fun cooking
