Tips for Buying Asparagus

When buying asparagus, choose fresh, firm, bright green, crisp stalks that have tightly closed tips, and not dry or woody.

Since asparagus comes in different sizes/thickness (pencil thin vs. thick spears). When possible, buy ones that are similar in size so they’ll cook more evenly.

Tips for Cooking Asparagus

Best to cook your asparagus as soon as you can for fresh delicious flavors.

  • 1 pound (454g) asparagus
  • 1 cup (250ml) cold water
  • Salt and black pepper to taste



  • Pressure Cook Asparagus: Pour 1 cup (250ml) cold water and place steamer rack in Instant Pot. Place 1lb (454g) asparagus on the steamer rack. Lock the lid. Pressure cook at High Pressure for 1 minute + Quick Release. Turn off the heat. Open the lid carefully.
  • Season & Serve Instant Pot Asparagus: Season with salt and black pepper. Then serve & enjoy the Instant Pot Asparagus!~ 🙂

Rinse the asparagus under cold tap water. Trim off the bottom (seemingly woody part) – an inch or two inches.


Pressure Cook Asparagus

Pour in 1 cup (250ml) cold water. Place steamer rack in Instant Pot.

If by chance you over cook asparagus (Or any vegetable)… you can always turn it into a delicious soup and use a hand blender to make it extra fancy.4 stars

Thanks,Joni, for your suggestion. I love soups made from asparagus, broccoli, butternut squash, etc. but the canned versions are much too salty since I now use almost no salt since I was diagnosed with renal failure. These are much healthier and I’ll bet tastier than canned!


Does the manual button on the instant pot automatically set the pot on “high”?

I used 2.5lbs of asparagus and 1 cup of water, 1 min on high pressure and asparagus were so limp and pale in color, had to throw away 🙁


Oh man .. that’s my fault! Too many asparagus, whoops!


I wondered about that. I just finished cooking a pound of asparagus and they are perfect. I bought 2 pounds today butI was afraid that cooking all of it would affect the outcome so I cooked one pound and I’ll cook the rest for tomorrow night’s supper. I’m the only human in the house but my dog and 2 parrots also love asparagus!
They are also delicious when added to Jasmine rice (which also comes out perfectly following Amy & Jacky’s instruction) and some fresh herbs.5 stars

Yes, 1 lb on a rack, max pressure setting on the Instant Pot Max. Maybe the Instant Pot Max takes a bit longer to reach its Max Pressure (which is a bit higher than the standard Instant Pot)?

Well we followed the recipe to the letter. The Asparagus came out limp and light in color. 1 cup cold water, 1 minute and quick release. I have the Instant Pot Max.
