What is Apple Butter?

Despite the name, it doesn’t contain any butter. 🙂

I’ve always been a big fan of homemade apple treats – warm cinnamon apples, hot of the oven apple pies…I’m drooling just pondering about these spiced autumn deliciousness. 😛

And Apple Butter is an awesome way to use up all your apples and preserve your apple harvest. So simple to make, yet so versatile for later use.

Apple Butter is simply a highly concentrated apple sauce – caramelized, brown, medium thick, sweet & tart, and spreadable.

The name “butter” actually came about because of the soft and spreadable consistency.

Oh so good on toast, pancakes, waffles, biscuits, yogurt, ice-cream…yum!!

 Instant Pot Apple Butter Testing

We’ve tested reducing the Instant Pot Applesauce into Instant Pot Apple Butter with 2 methods using the Saute function and Slow Cook function.

Instant Pot Apple Butter Recipe (Pressure Cooker Apple Butter) Testing and Results
Side by side comparison between the 2 reducing methods (Saute & Slow Cook)

Saute Method

Using Saute Less to simmer and reduce the applesauce into apple butter is more hands-on (it’ll require monitoring).

However, this method gives you the flexibility to stop right at your desired consistency. Keep in mind that the apple butter will thicken up even more once chilled in the refrigerator.

*Note: this is great for those who enjoy the consistency between applesauce and apple butter.

*Pro Tip: it’ll be handy to use a splatter guard to cover the Instant Pot and silicone mitts if you wish to stir the applesauce.

Slow Cook Method

Using Slow Cook More to reduce the applesauce into apple butter will take longer. However, it’s hands-off and there were barely any splattering.

So choose the method you prefer to achieve your desired yummy Apple Butter! 😀

  1. Hello Amy and Jackie.
I love all your instant recipes.
They’re amazing. I am just trying out the apple butter one now? Can we can the apple butter as soon as we are done all the steps and the butter is done for a longer shelf life??
    Thank you kindly

  2. Hello, i havent made this yet but curious how its sugar free with 26 grams of sugar liated on the nutrition label. Is that because you add molasses? Or is that the natural sugar from the apples? It sounds delicious and i cant wait to make it!!

  3. Hi there,
I loved this recipe and was excited to try it in my new Instant Pot 6qt Ultra… until I tried it. I only got HALF of my 5 lbs of apples in and with such little water… 1/4 cup for a FULL 5lbs there wasn’t enough steam to bring it to pressure. Thankfully the IP warns you, and I added another 3/4 c at least. Still wouldn’t seal to pressure. Ended up immersion blending what had cooked and transferring it into a stove top pot to finish. Not sure what I did wrong but would love some feedback. My IP expressly says a minimum of 1c -2c of liquid to create pressure lock. Other forum users have managed with 1/2. How can I still use your fabulous recipe?

    1. Hi Kerrie,

Sorry to hear what happened and thank you so much for your question.

The newer batch of Instant Pot are more sensitive with the overheat/burn message.

Apple has plenty of liquid in them and will release it’s juice once heated.

Can you please do a water test with 1/2 cup of water and see if the Instant Pot will get up to pressure properly.

Take care & have fun cooking
      Jacky

  4. Just made my first batch. I used Gravenstein apples and about 1/2 cup of honey. I loved that I didn’t have to peel the apples. I ended up with seven half-pint jars and a little left over for everyone to sample. The butter was delicious. I will be making it again, and I will be canning it to keep it shelf-stable for a year. Thanks for creating and testing this recipe.

    1. Hi Dori,

Sorry for the late reply. Happy to hear you enjoyed the recipe with Gravenstein apples! Thank you so much for your kind words 🙂

Take care & have fun cooking
      Jacky

  5. At what point do you add the vanilla? I don’t see it mentioned here. I only ask because I’ve seen it added at the end in some other recipes, which I found odd. Thanks

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words Michael.

Sorry for the delay in replying as we are in the process of moving with limited internet access 🙁

Have fun cooking & have a great weekend
      Jacky

  6. Thanks for this recipe. I add one cup of quince butter to the cooked apples. The finished apple/Quince butter is irresistible.
The recipe doesn’t state the yield. How much butter did you get from five lbs of apples.
This is a great series and very well timed. Thanks for all you do. I have recommended your website to all my family.

    1. Hi Marilyn,

thank you for your kind words and being so supportive 🙂

This recipe will yield about 800ml – 1L depending how long it was reduced.

Take care & have fun cooking
      Jacky

  7. Sounds delocious. I was looking for diy Christmas gifts with the Instant pot.
